Why Regular Oil Changes Are Crucial for Auto Maintenance

When you consider that your car is not only one of the largest investments that you will make, and add to that how dependent you are on it’s reliability, then it is a foregone conclusion that regular maintenance to keep your car running smoothly and more cost efficiently is in your best interest. The number one function of your motor oil is to protect your engine against heat and friction. Regular oil changes contribute in a huge way in prolonging the life of your car and help you to avoid more costly repairs in the future.

Here are some compelling reasons to help you commit to frequent oil changes and keep your engine running smooth and gunk-free.

  • ŸLonger engine life: Your engine oil has a big job; it keeps all moving parts protected and lubricated. When your car engine is running, tiny flakes and crud get caught in the oil. This causes wear and friction which are two of the leading causes of engine failure. Regular oil changes keeps your engine lubricated with clean motor oil.
  • ŸBetter vehicle emissions: Engines run cleaner when the oil is clean and thereby emit less exhaust than dirty engines do. Do yourself and the environment a favor long before it is time to take your car in for emissions testing and get regular oil changes.
  • ŸImproved gas mileage: Remember the flakes and debris causing friction? Well all that crud and friction contributes to a rough running engine and poor gas mileage. Keep your oil changes regular for a smoother engine and better gas mileage.

Most auto manufacturers recommend that you change your motor oil every 3,000 miles. Diesel engines and turbo-charged gasoline engines should also have an oil change every 3,000 miles/six months.

The standard every 3,000 mile oil change is for vehicles that are driven under ideal circumstances. Keep in mind that “ideal” circumstances do not include lots of short trips in cold weather, dusty gravel roads, and hot freeway driving at high speeds. This is considered “severe service” driving and the recommendation is to change your oil every 3,000 miles or 6 months.

It may not seem obvious, but take care to change the oil filer each time you have an oil change. The function of the oil filter is to remove contaminants and small particles floating in the oil. It used to be recommended to change the oil filter every other oil change to save some money. Taking into consideration that the average cost of oil filters is from about $7.00-$30.00, the “savings” should be calculated against the risk of your filter running out of capacity at 3,000 miles.

Just so that you don’t continue to put off that next oil change because you are waiting for that fabulous deal…well here is a great deal for you on two oil changes, so no excuses! Happy winter driving and be safe out there.
