Car Maintenance for Your Summer Road Trip

car maintenance, do it before you road trip

The Seattle weather is clearing up, kids are out of school, and thousands of people in the area are gearing up for a good old-fashioned road trip. There are so many places in Washington State that are just a car ride away that it’s tempting to see the sunny weather report and just take off. But before you pack your bags, you want to do a little car maintenance to make sure it's as ready to go as you are.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

Here are a few of our favorite maintenance tips to follow before you embark on your summer adventure.

  • Check oil and washer fluids. Check your car’s oil. If you are nearing the time of an oil change, it’s best to do it before your trip. Make sure your windshield wiper fluid is full in both your front and rear windows.
  • Look at the condition of your tires. Check the air pressure in the tires and your tire wear. If one tire is lower than the rest have it checked for a nail or screw.
  • Examine your spare tire. Look at your spare tire for air and its condition. This is an often overlooked task on your car maintenance list, but if you happen to need it on your trip you will be glad you checked it.
  • Make sure your air filter is clean. The air filter in your car prevents harmful dirt and contaminants from entering your engine. A clean air filter is essential to maximize fuel economy.
  • Inspect and test your battery. Often batteries are put under heavier strain from radios and devices being charged while the vehicle is not running. The team at Scott Sherman can make sure your battery is ready to go if you believe there is a concern.
  • Check all lights. Carefully check all exterior, interior and brake lights to ensure they are working.
  • Look for cracking in the wiper blade and replace if needed. Although we are no longer in the rainy season, we all know that rain is always possible in the great Northwest. So make sure checking your wiper blades is part of your car maintenance.  Your wipers work hard so regularly check their condition.
  • Make sure device charger works properly. This is especially important for longer road trips. You don’t want your phone to be out of battery power if you end up on the side of the road.
  • Prepare an emergency roadside kit. Not sure what to include?  We have some suggestions below.

Emergency items to store in your car

  • Jumper cables
  • Emergency blanket
  • Flares or lead road markers
  • Flashlight
  • Working jack and lug wrench
  • Small tools such as pliers, wrenches, sockets (depending on aptitude)
  • Drinking water
  • Life tool – A tool that easily breaks glass and can cut seat belt in an emergency. We sell them at our Greenwood Avenue location in Seattle.
